To the students

with the horror of the pogroms

unfathomable rupture

of flesh

in their mind’s eye, devising

essays

in the aura of learning

thinking how

(only

more ineffably)

could this happen

& could it happen here?

horrid yes

in the hall

[           ]

words

frail envelopes

if

only

the body

could nurture

the bullet

wash it

of its killing

like a creature in the movies

instead the soul folds in

purposeless peace

seals the faces

of corpses

in this very room

where a moment ago

I was thinking

we could have paradise

here

in this mis-imagined world

The line “purposeless peace/ seals the faces/ of corpses” is borrowed from Mina Loy’s poem, “Photo After Pogrom.”
